Over at Craft Hope the blog tells how we can all make dish rags or dish towels to send that they can use to clean the marine life. I found this photo in one of the scrapbooks my brother gave me. I believe this photo was taken at the 50th wedding anniversary of my grandparents Parrish Elmer TUCKER and Juretta Bell STEPHENS. This is the only photo I have found so far that includes almost all of their children that were alive at the time. Starting in the front row:

The newest challenge from GeneaBloggers is to write a letter requesting information. I just completed this challenge the other day so talk about timing! Although my "letter" was actually an email that I sent I think it still counts. My email went to the Pulaski County Historical Society in Somerset, KY. I have been trying to prove that Joseph ROY is the son of Thomas ROY (Revolutionary War patriot). I have also been looking for more information on my STEPHENS line. I sent my check off for copies of the records that they found so far and I have asked them to keep looking. I am making a genealogy research trip to Kentucky in June and can't wait!

This ring belonged to my mother. I believe the stone is an abalone shell. When I was a kid, mom used to let me "play" with her jewelry box. I would take everything out and look at it, try it on and then put it back where I found it. After my mom died, Dad let me have her jewelry since I was her only daughter. When I looked in mom's jewelry box at this ring, the band was broken and mom had put a band-aid around it so she could wear it. I took it to the place that fixes all of my jewelry and got it repaired so I could wear it. I had to have it sized smaller so I could wear it. I estimate this ring is over 50 years old. I wear it everyday.

Today for Wordless Wednesday I am positively wordless (speechless) myself. I have a friend that works at the Champaign County Historical Archive Room, she also works at the local Family History Center at the LDS church. Anyway, I have learned so much from all the various blogs I read and I was sharing with her some of the web sites that I found out about through these blogs. I got an email from her saying that I should write down all the web sites I shared with her and how it would make a nice handout for a presentation that I could give at the Champaign County Historical Society meeting in August and since I am not a member of the group they would pay me a 30 dollar speakers fee! Yep...I was speechless. I told her I would consider it but talk about stepping out of my comfort zone! My daughter knows how to make a PowerPoint presentation and my best friend Linda said she would help too. I guess I need to get my thoughts together to see if I can put together a 30 to 45 minute presentation.

I share my first name with my great aunt. I do remember meeting her when I was a child. (I just realized I need to add her to my online tree too!) I use Family Tree Maker 2010, but since I have an iPhone, I have found that I like using my ancestry.com tree. There is an app called Tree to Go that shows me all my records I have on my ancestry tree. I just need to get the two of them up to par with each other!

I have been tracking down my Dad's brothers and sisters. Talk about unusual names! There were nine of them and their first names all start with a V. I used to tease my Dad that grandma and grandpa TUCKER started making them up! I have been able to find some kind of record for all but one uncle. I did find a record in the SS Death Index but I am not certain it is him but I met him when I was a child so I know he existed and he is mentioned in an aunt's obituary that I found.
Here are the names of my aunts and uncles on my Dad's side (none are living) and I have included their nicknames:
Virgil Delmer (he went by Slim)
Versie May (she died as a child)
Viletha (Dad said that her name was Vi Letha and that she combined it into one name but I haven't found a record to confirm that yet)
Velvert Lee (he went by Lee)
Vola Ermon (he went by Vobe)
Vester Eulon (he went by Vess)
Viola Pearl (she went by Dee Dee)
Violet Valjean (she went by Doll)
Velma Isabella (she died as a child)
According to death certificates, Versie and Velma both died from the same thing.

I guess I got off subject with this post but I wanted to share the unusual names of my aunts and uncles.

As I looked through my records I did find that I have both sets of grandparents marriage records. The above is page one and the photo below is the back side of the record. This is for my mother's parents Edward Homer FERGUSON and Hazel Emmaretta KERCHEVAL. They were married 16 February 1915 at Ash Grove Twp, Shelby, Illinois, USA.

I found my other set of grandparents marriage record but I realized that it is still a paper copy 11 x 17 that I need to take to Kinko's to have it reduced to fit on to a 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper so then I can scan it into my computer! Their names are Parrish Elmer TUCKER and Juretta Bell STEPHENS. They were married in Russell County, Kentucky, USA on 08 September 1904.

I am glad I have been writing this blog since it is gradually helping me to organize my records and get them scanned into my computer so I can share them and post the records easier!

This is the headstone of my great great grandparents. If you read my blog about Penelope SEARS (a pioneer woman) this is her headstone. I thought I would try and continue the theme. Here is the birth and death information for Penelope SEARS, she was born in Fayette, Ohio on 6 July 1834 and she died in Ash Grove, Shelby, Illinois on 12 January 1921. She married Anderson FERGUSON in 1852.
Anderson FERGUSON was born in Southampton, Virginia on 15 October 1813 and died in Shelby, Illinois on 02 August 1894.

"Anderson Ferguson, a pioneer of Shelby county, died the other day, and his wife found $1,000 hidden in a hollow log."

I wonder if Penelope knew to look for the money or if she just got lucky and found it!

Sometimes when I am trying to decide what to post, I feel like I am jumping around. I guess I need to come up with a plan! I would like to learn how to pre-post my blog and then have it post a few days later. I think that would make it easier to stay with a theme.

This is a photo of Josephine GARIS COCHRAN. She is my great aunt (I guess I really should check that since I don't have her in my online family tree! She might be a great great aunt!!) Josephine was the first person to invent a practical dish washing machine. You can read about it here. Her design was patented on December 28, 1886. I think we owe her a great debt of gratitude!

The Accidental Genealogist has a new theme for National Women's History Month.

I am not sure if Penelope SEARS is my "favorite" but I enjoyed reading about her life from her obituary I found. The one on the left was printed in the Windsor Gazette (Windsor, Shelby, Illinois) on 20 January 1921. I haven't found which paper printed the other one.

I found it interesting that came to Illinois in a wagon. My mother told me that someone had traveled here that way but until I found the obituary, I never knew for sure to whom she was referring. It is neat that she was known for her flowers and that they made a lot of their own items. A true pioneer woman! She is my great great grandmother.

I guess my madness today comes from a record I posted on my ancestry.com tree. I added a record to my tree, then had to leave for an appointment and wasn't done with adding the source for the record, came back from my appointment to finish adding the details for the source of the record, and someone had already attached the record to their own tree! Don't get me wrong...I prefer to be the type of genealogist that shares information and records that I find. It just made me feel like a vulture had swooped down and grabbed what they could. I have debated about changing my tree to private but I really would rather share. If I change it to private I guess it would force them to contact me but I know some people aren't comfortable doing that and I understand, I really do but if I find something on someone's tree that I could use I usually try and send a message to them to let them know how we are related and give them my email address so we can share information. Maybe I am just being sensitive but man I wasn't gone an hour! So do I continue to share my ancestry.com tree or go private??

Sentimental Sunday - 02/21/10

While looking through my mother's scrapbook for something to post for Sentimental Sunday I found this Valentine that I gave my mother in 1967.

I didn't realize it was there or could I have posted it last week for Valentine's Day! I also found the obituaries and funeral cards for an aunt and uncle on my Dad's side of the family. The one obituary actually gave the middle names of two of my uncles. Dad had told me what their middle names were but I had never found written proof of it. So I added the information to my ancestry.com tree and then ended up finding my grandfather's WW II Registration Card. Somehow I missed it thinking I already had it and it ended up that what I already had was his WW I Registration Card. I guess it pays to look back over records sometimes! The WW II Registration Card had my grandpa's (Parrish Elmer TUCKER) middle name listed and it is the only place I found that documented it and it had his signature.

Kevin over at USA Family Tree offers free genealogy lessons. I have been learning a lot from his lessons. Today, her told us about a free service to back up your data in the clouds. I should say when I checked it out, the first 2 GB is free and if you need more storage space than that then it costs a monthly fee. The free service is called Dropbox and once you sign up by creating a user name and password you can start saving your data. It is as easy as drag and drop the file! You have access to your data on ANY computer that has internet access. I thought that those of you trying for the medal to back up your data might be interested.

My local newspaper the Champaign News Gazette has a column that is printed on Fridays called Illinois Ancestors. The column is written by Joan Griffis. In today's (Friday, February 19, 2010 page B-6) paper she gave the link to a one page document called the Genealogy Research Process chart. Joan goes on to explain that it is a "visualization of concepts" based off the book "Evidence Explained:Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace" (Baltimore, MD:Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 2007) I printed off a copy to keep with my genealogical records. Since another medal is to cite your sources, I thought this information would be helpful.

Tombstone Tuesday - 2/16/10

Although technically this post isn't about any particular tombstone I thought the subject would be fitting. Shawn over at Cambria Co, PA-My family of Bracken, Singer, & Gabriel wrote about how after her grandmother died she smelled the smell when she went to her grandmother's house. I have to agree with Shawn, I don't know if you believe in ghosts or that we get visited by our loved ones but I finally decided to share what happened to me.
I have an Ancestry.com account and have started getting back to using it more. I found a couple of cousins through the web site while looking for information. One cousin, Randy Ferguson had a wealth of information that he shared with me. (Thanks Randy!) Anyway, getting on with my story...the night after Randy and I had emailed a lot of information back and forth about our FERGUSON family and after I went to sleep I had a really weird dream. In my dream, my daughter and I were in a room with a whole bunch of people. All the people were dressed as if they were from different time periods and they kept coming over and checking us out but not speaking to us but just to each other. I remember hearing some of their conversation as they discussed my daughter and I and how we were related. I sure wish I could have remembered everything they said when I woke up. When I woke up, I just knew and felt that those people in that room were my FERGUSON relatives that I had been trying to locate on ancestry and that Randy had shared his information. Believe it or not!

Sentimental Sunday - 02/14/10

I went to my local Archive Room to look through some microfilm that I had ordered. I was looking for an article that my mom had in her scrapbook. I was trying to find the date that it was published in the Windsor Gazette (Windsor, Shelby, Illinois). I found what I was looking for and a whole lot more. The newspaper published a letter that my Uncle Wayne FERGUSON had written on 28 February 1944. He was killed on 10 March 1944, and the letter was published on 16 March 1944. He was already dead when they published the letter. I sat there in the library just crying my eyes out and even as I write this I keep getting pretty choked up. The next article I found was his obituary and it was published in the Windsor Gazette on 13 April 1944. In that article it states that the family had been notified by telegram THAT day that Wayne died in action in the Southwest Pacific war area. I guess it just got to me that they didn't even know he was dead yet and the letter he wrote was published after his death. Here is what he wrote:

"From Wayne Ferguson
                                                                    Southwest Pacific
   February 28, 1944

Dear Editor,
     I've got a little time tonight so I thought I would drop you a few lines I see several of the boys in the service write to you.
     There isn't a whole lot to write about because you can't write just anything you please. Still we have to write something to keep the mail rolling in. I think the most important thing over here besides chow call is mail call. I think about all the boys overseas will agree with me.
     I have been getting pretty fair mail service on my letters but not so good on the Gazettes. I got the November 25 and December 2 issues day before yesterday. They were the first I had received since the first week of December. They are usually about that far behind over here on the newspapers. We have a long time that we don't get any at all and then a whole lot comes in at once. I don't think I've missed more than one issue since I've been over here.
     Well, I've been over here for twenty-five months now. I just wonder how many boys from around Windsor have been over that long? I've done a little traveling in the last two years: Australia, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, Fiji, and now this place. Just another island in the combat zone. A few air raids but none for more than two weeks now.
     I guess that will be all for this time as it is about time to go to bed.

52 Weeks To Better Genealogy - Challenge 7 - 02/14/10

I played around with Google maps and found my house, and the house I grew up in. I can see where it would be cool to check out places I have never been but areas that my ancestors were. I was able to locate a cemetery where my 4 x great grandfather, John COCHRAN is buried. He is buried at Cochran's Cemetery outside of Windsor, Shelby, Illinois. The cemetery is in a fenced in area in a farmer's field. In the satellite view I was able to see exactly where the cemetery was in the field and now I know exactly how to get there.

This is a photo of myself and my DH. We went to a Gateway Grizzlies baseball game with friends. Looking at this photo I realize just how much weight we both have lost! I guess I need to get an updated photo of my husband and myself. The Gateway Grizzlies are a minor league team. I had never been to a game like that before and it sure was fun! They are always doing something between innings and you have a chance to win stuff. That ballpark had a special sandwich which we tried. It was a hamburger patty between two layers of a Krispy Kreme doughnut. I know it sounds weird. It was pretty sweet tasting.

Graveyard Rabbit - Forgotten Cemetery - 02/09/10

This sign is located right after you cross the railroad tracks. The road continues down to the boat ramp into the water. Purvis Cemetery (Moultrie County, Illinois) is located about 300 feet right in front of this sign in the tree line. This is the only sign you will see to know you are close. We had to park the car and walk back into the tree line to find the cemetery. My 3 x great grandfather is buried there, George PURVIS born 14 Jul 1812 in Bath, Kentucky and died 19 Jul 1889 in East Nelson, Moultrie, Illinois. He married Cassandra WALLER 19 Mar 1833 in Ash Grove, Shelby, Illinois. George is buried with his second wife, Mahala POOR.

This is the headstone of my 3 x great grandfather Isaac Hume BRACKIN. He is buried in Gaskill Cemetery Ash Grove, Shelby, Illinois.
Issac Hume BRACKIN was born 05 Feb 1806 in Orange County, New York. He married Elizabeth TODD on 28 Oct 1830 in Shelby, Ohio. He died 25 Feb 1899 in Ash Grove, Shelby, Illinois. According to his obituary he went by Judge since he used to be one in Ohio.

I thought about waiting to post this next Sunday since it is Valentine's Day but I decided to go ahead and post it now to give you something to think about this week. I was looking through my mother's scrapbook and found this poem. Mom kept the scrapbook before she met and married my Dad. My mom, Margaret FERGUSON graduated from high school in 1942 and she married my Dad in 1945. I am pretty sure she was about 19-21 years old when she put the scrapbook together. I believe this poem was written by an admirer of hers. I looked on the internet and didn't find it so I think it could be an original poem but I don't know for sure. If you find it somewhere, let me know and I will edit my post. I can't quite make out the next to the last line of the poem so maybe you will have better luck. Let me know and I can edit the post for that too!

I remember my mom telling me she almost married someone before they left for the war but the guy's mother wouldn't sign the paperwork (he wasn't 21 yet). I will post it like it is written as best as I can read it.

This is my grandfather's registration card. My mother always told me that my grandfather only had one eye. She said that he lost an eye while chopping wood. She said he had a glass eye. This card indicates that he had one eye so it backs up part of what my mom told me.

The surname for today is TUCKER. This is my Dad's line. There have been TUCKER families in the United States since the 1600's. I joined the Tucker Cousins Discussion Group and even had my brother Y-DNA tested at Family Tree DNA to help figure out which line I belong. As part of the Y-DNA testing, I joined the Tucker Surname group at Family Tree DNA. There are a lot of really good long time researchers that belong to the group. What prompted me to ask my brother to get Y-DNA tested in the first place was as I was researching my Dad's line on Ancestry.com my research was leading me in one direction but thanks to the long time researchers and other cousins, they believed I was going down the wrong path. After I got the test results, it turned out that they were correct. Most of the family trees that I found at the time on ancestry were incorrect! With Y-DNA proof, I now know up to a point which line I belong. They divided up the various TUCKER groups by the oldest known relative. I belong to the TTT group which stands for Thomas TUCKER/TOOKER that was from England. Unfortunately, it also created a brick wall for me! I have been unable to find any proof of who the father is of my most recent common ancestor with my cousins. Luckily, thanks to my cousin Walt TUCKER, he has pretty good records that he shared with me about our common ancestor. So here goes with the information I do know:

This necklace belonged to my mother and I really enjoy wearing it. The photo doesn't do it justice but it has a nice patina on it. I don't know where it is from but I always wondered if her brother gave it to her (the one that died during WW II). It is a good thing I am tall! It hangs down almost to my belt buckle. It makes a tinkling sound when I walk. I always tell the guys at work that they shouldn't be caught doing anything wrong since they can hear me coming!

This is my great grandparents: John Eli Brough FERGUSON and Anna Laura COCHRAN. John was born 21 Jul 1865 in Ash Grove, Shelby, Illinois and died 22 Jan 1905 in Ash Grove, Shelby, Illinois. Anna was born 07 Aug 1868 in Ash Grove, Shelby, Illinois and died 18 Jun 1946 in Windsor, Shelby, Illinois. They were married on 27 Nov 1890 in Windsor, Shelby, Illinois. I have a photo of John that lists Brough as a middle name for him and the proof I found that finally listed his middle name was on the birth certificate for his son Edward Homer FERGUSON. They are buried in Cochran's Cemetery outside of Windsor, Illinois. I took this photo myself in Summer of 2009 and I did post it to findagrave.

52 Weeks To Better Genealogy - Challenge #3 Assess Yourself! -01/18/10

I thought about my records for myself and I know I have copies of my vital records since I needed them to join DAR. Thinking about other types of records I have I know I have my paperwork in pretty good order. I purchased Suze Orman's Protection Portfolio and I just followed what she said to put in the case. In the event of an emergency I can grab the case and I will have all my important papers (house, car, credit card, etc) information at my fingertips. I started scrapping a few years ago so I have quite a few photos already organized. I found I liked the products by Creative Memories. I like how their paper matches the colors of stickers, etc. I need to get inspired to get back working on it but for now I am more involved in my genealogy research. I have been learning a lot reading other people's blogs. It has given me ideas of where to look for records that I hadn't considered.

I got a display case for Christmas that I am going to put the flag that was draped over his coffin, his Purple Heart, and this photo. I am new to blogging so please bear with me as I learn!
When I read the title of today's blog I had a nice memory come that I wanted to share. My Aunt Dee Dee (Viola Pearl TUCKER) always gave us cookies from the cookie jar at Grandma and Grandpa's (Parrish Elmer TUCKER and Juretta Bell STEPHENS) house here in Champaign, IL. Aunt Dee Dee was born with a cleft palate so when she spoke she was kind of hard to understand. After Grandma and Grandpa died she went to live with her sister (Viletha TUCKER). Aunt Dee Dee eventually ended up in Russell Springs, KY living with her brother "Slim" Virgil Delmar TUCKER. I used to paint ceramics and I had the opportunity to buy a cookie jar that looked just like the one Grandma and Grandpa had that Aunt Dee Dee used to give me cookies out of and I didn't buy it but now always wish I had.

I have been working on trying to prove the Revolutionary War Service
of John Cochran. The DAR returned my supplemental asking for better
proof. What really gets me is that the DAR Chapter in Shelby County,
IL dedicated a marker in 1986 recognizing his service! It seems like
someone at DAR should have whatever records were submitted to prove
his service for the marker. I have a photo of the marker with his
name on it I plan to send in.
